Tips From Long-Term Losers
A recent FDA report on weight loss mentioned the National Weight Control Registry, which includes a database of over 3,000 American adults who have lost an average of 60 pounds and kept it off for an average of six years. The group’s secret? According to the study’s co-developer, R.I. Wing, the majority shares four common behaviors: they eat a low-fat, high-carb diet, they monitor themselves by weighing in frequently, they are very physically active, and they eat breakfast. Presto, magico!
Could this be the new weight loss bandwagon? Eat low-fat/high carb foods, weigh frequently, MOVE your @rse...oh and eat breakfast.
It's almost freakishly simple no?

They make it sound so simple, but I know I feel better when I eat lower carb. Are they implying that I can never lose weight and keep it off? To me, that's a ridiculous idea. I think that if they continue this database, over time they will find that this simple equation does not fit everyone... they just currently have the people who lost weight and kept it off from the low-fat fad.
is that for losing weight or for keeping it off for over 6yrs? AND I agree it does seem a little too easy. That easy that I keep looking over my shoulder as I write this expecting some kind of gag because I brought into it HAHA.
Good point Nicole, when I read high carb, I was a big taken aback. I suspect what they mean by by high carb, is lots of fruits & veggies, not the refined high/fructose stuff.
I think they where refering to GOOD High Carbs, like fruit and veggies. Not Doughnuts, bread and cookies.
We will see what they say next. "Cause they are ALWAYA changing the rules of the game.
It's worth noting that the registry has been going on for many years and you need to have kept the weight off for several years to even be eligible to join. So the people whom low-carb eating works for them aren't highly represented in the sample because there aren't a lot of people who've been low carbing for many years.
And also, to a dietician "high carbohydrate" is not super duper high carb... it's maybe 50-60% or so. And I don't think anyone's keeping weight off with tons of sugared soda and doughnuts... if you read Anne Fletcher's book Thin For Life they're talking fruit, vegetables and whole grains and maybe some yams or pasta.
I read another article that said the most successful weight loss people were the ones who also had structure in their life and planned their workouts. they functioned best by scheduling and organization.

Anything that simple scares me just a little.
