Nicole Richie’s Weight Loss Plummet- Shocking Details

Reality star turned fashion designer Nicole Richie had had issues with weight her whole life. Unlike most celebs, though, her problem has been that she’s been too skinny. A couple of years back, however, Nicole’s weight dropped to near anorexic levels.

Nicole has had a long history of crash dieting. She would fixate on a particular  diet craze, go all out on it for a couple of months and end up losing more muscle tissue than body fat. But Nicole’s 2014 diet has been more outlandish – and dangerous – than anything that has come before. As a result of it, her weight had plummeted to just 88 pounds. That’s just 40 kilograms or 6.2 stone.

In the past, the tabloid press in America have been quick to label Nicole as an anorexic. This is a label that she adamantly denies applying to herself . . .

I felt it was a little unfair to say someone has an eating disorder when they don’t. It’s extremely insulting and irresponsible. An eating disorder is serious and it’s a disease.

nicole music awardsNicole has never been a big eater. In fact, she often has to force herself to take in the nutrients that her body needs. As a result she has been living off of a diet of sunflower seeds and juice. She is a big juicing fan, downing up to 6 glasses of green juice per day. In between drinks, she will snack on sunflower seeds. And that is about it.

The warning effects of Nicole’s crazy diet were all too evident in photos that had been doing the social media rounds. She looked very unhealthy and weak. Nicole’s husband, singer Joel Madden, was reportedly extremely concerned about his wife’s health condition. He does his best to encourage her to follow a proper nutritious diet. The problem is that Joel is often away from the home working overseas. That leaves Nicole at home with two young children. Inevitably, she lapses back into an unhealthy eating pattern.

Even though the juices do include healthy foods like hale, cabbage, broccoli and spinach, each drink only contains 200 calories. That is giving her a daily caloric intake of 1200. For a woman of her size, she requires about 1800 calories per day just to maintain her daily energy level and bodyweight. If she is only getting two thirds of that amount, then she is on the fast track to losing vital nutrients and muscle tissue – in addition to having no energy.

Getting More Balance

Fortunately Nicole seems have become somewhat more balanced in her eating habits in the last 12 months. She no longer restricts herself to vegetable and fruit smoothies. She has learnt to eat small whole food meals, regularly spaced throughout the day. These meals now feature a quality protein source such as grilled chicken, along with complex carbs from brown rice, green vegetables and fruits. Nicole also strives to include plenty of omega-3 fatty acid rich foods in her diet and that of her children. She is well aware how important omega-3 is to brain health and to fat loss.

Nicole also pays pretty strict attention to the eating habits of her children. Trips to McDonald’s are on the no go list, along with soft drinks, and other sugar laden goodies.

Having recently become an advocate of the Tracy Anderson method of training, Nicole has adopted some of Tracy’s nutritional concepts into her eating pattern. Anderson’s meal plans are based on real food, but quantities are somewhat limited. This is an area where Nicole will have to be careful in order to avoid slipping back to her low calorie extreme diet days.

Here is a typical day’s meals based on the Tracy Anderson method:

  • Breakfast – Papaya and blueberries
  • Lunch – Greens with oranges and pumpkin seeds
  • Snack – Chocolate chestnut pudding
  • Dinner – Grilled tofu and pea mash

Nicole has always been a regular exerciser. Regardless of how extreme her previous diets have been, or how low her weight has dropped, she has always summoned up the energy to work out. It’s no surprise that she loves to dance, so dancing has been a cornerstone of her workout routine for many years. For the last couple of years, she has been an avid follower of the Tracy Anderson method.

Rather than focusing on the major muscle groups like most workout plans, the Tracy Anderson method puts the emphasis on the smaller assist muscles. The goal of these workouts is to sculpt the body of a dancer. According to Anderson, placing too much focus on the large muscles, such as the chest, back and thighs, will add too much bulk to a woman’s frame.

The Tracy Anderson method involves long workouts – up to two hours – in a personalized dance studio (there are franchises scattered all over the country). Many of the exercises are based on dance moves with which Nicole is very familiar. A lot of emphasis is placed on working the abs and core, along with the legs.

A key part of the Tracy Anderson workout method and training philosophy is to mix up your training. To many people spend all of their workout time pounding away on the treadmill while reading the latest issue of Cosmo magazine – and wondering why they aren’t making progress. If they were to take a leaf out of Tracy – and Nicole’s – book then they would switch up their exercise plan with weight training, spinning, boxing and cardio sculpt. Not only would doing so keep their workouts fresh and invigorating, it would keep their muscles guessing and responding.

Nicole hits the Tracy Anderson dance studio four times per week. On the other days she can be seen walking her dogs around the local neighborhood and jogging around the local park.

Nicole’s struggles with extreme weight loss appear to be behind her. We hope that she will continue to follow a nutritious, balanced eating plan, chipped with regular exercise in order to fuel her body and keep it looking trim and terrific.
