One of the things the MT upgrade was supposed to tackle was comment spam, lately I've gotten junkified spam, words make no sense, link goes to nowhere. Tonight I got slammed with about 15 hits in 2 minutes. Can't do auto close comments because MT depreciated the feature that it needs, real smart, yet spam is still coming through. I was NOT looking forward to going through 6 months worth of posts and closing them one by one. Luckily MTCloseComments works like a charm, I have it set to close comments older than 5 days and that have had no response in 3, I *may* change that. For now, I'm protected.

So I'll reword the directory text and approval process to read, a link back in any of the 3 formats is acceptable. Linking back with the unique url was really optional, all it does is rank peeps on the popular site list, but starting today a simple link back to the directory or blog is fine and dandy.

I didn't work on any of my ongoing to do things, I actually didn't plan to get online @ all, but ended up revising the wording on the directory side. After having 6 sites still sitting in the queue after 7 days of not adding a link back, I've removed the add a link page and replaced it w/a landing page explaining that link backs are mandatory. If people agree and still want to apply, they can click onto the add a link page from there.

This *should* cut down on me having to email mail people and constantly checking their sites for links. i'll let this run for about a month and see if it goes. By March, I'm going to do a quarterly check on all directory links, weeding out dead, discontinued or off topic sites and going thru all the earlier sites that haven't linked back and emailing them asknig for them to do so. I'll give them till the next quarter, 3 months, to do so and if they haven't I'm removing them too.

Not to be harsh but linking back is where it's at. Ok lame, but I'm tired.

To add in Feb news, linking back, webring & fitroll

Today, I launched the site news section to take away the non related topics from the main section of the site. This area of the blog is really for me to keep track of all the site changes.

Yesterday I removed the sweepstakes graphic, launched the fitroll, webring and site poll.

Today I added moved the traffic section to the end of the page, when the counters went down the graphics were gone and broke the layout on the right side. I'll spend the rest of today moving the old site news to this blog and fixing the template. I also made the category, monthly archives and indi archives into drop down boxes. Once I added the poll, the right started getting packed. Plus I have more things to add in coming months, may as well make room for it now.

As for the design, I wanted someting really crisp and looking for a 2 column layout, I found this stylesheet which is perfect. Going forward all site related news and changes will be logged here.

This is what trial and error week is all about, I made two changes to the buttons page after it was pointed out there was a slight technical glitch.

1) I took away the "copy to highlight" code function. It doesn't work well on all browsers.

2) I moved the buttons to it's own page.

The main purpose of extra buttons is to give alternates choices to the default directory button but today I found that by having them "exposed" so soon, people may go to use them first. Then when they join the directory (nudge nudge) they may wonder what's the deal with all the button choices and what should link to what and which link goes where.

The link to the button page is now included in the approval email, and I reworded the Fat Fighting Movement page to basically say: grab the button after joining the directory.

Hopefully, this way, it's a bit clearer and if it's not, someone will let me know :)
